Rogaine Extra Information

What is a Rogaine?

Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation in which teams of two to five members visit as many checkpoints as possible in the time allotted to the event. Usually teams travel entirely on foot, navigating by map and compass between checkpoints in terrain that varies from open farmland to steep hilly bush-clad country-side. Teams must stick together.

Anyone from elite athletes to families, children and grandparents can share the satisfaction that comes from cross-country navigation.  Teams range from all levels of fitness and enter either the 3, 6, 12 or 24 hour challenge.  There are no set routes and teams can choose to go after whichever checkpoints they want, but must return to base before time is up.

Highland Events Rogaines

Highland Events have been organising Rogaines in the Otago Region since 2007.  There are 3 events (at this stage) every year, Spring,  Autumn and Winter.  Terry has great connections with rural land owners and farmers.   This allows participants to get  into some very interesting areas not otherwise accessible to the public.  Plus, there's always lots of prizes for the worthy and the lucky.

New to Rogaining?
New rogainers are always welcome.  Check the Event Preparation tab for what you need to bring on the day and Event Organisers will help you do the rest. Rogaine is a team sport and your team MUST stick together.  The satisfaction comes from finding your way around the route that you have chosen and navigating back to base within the time limit. If you have any questions about whether Rogaine is for you, just give us a call.

3, 6 or 12 hour Rogaines
In these events, it is usual to have a central base camp (Hash House) where hot meals are provided for 6 and 12 hour events. Teams may return at any time to eat, rest. Some competitive teams may cover over 50km in a 12 hour event.

What happens on the day?
The planning of your route begins between 1 and 2 hours (depending on the length of the event) before the start of the event.

  • You are provided with a map with all the checkpoint locations marked on it and a description of each checkpoint and its point value. You choose your own route to get whatever checkpoints you want but the idea is to maximise the total point value obtained.

  • You need to make sure that you get back before the time limit expires as there are hefty point penalties for being late. 10 points per minute late or part thereof.

  • At each checkpoint there is a A5 piece of weather proof paper with a code on it. The code must be recorded in the appropriate number on your score card related to the location on your map; this proves you have been to the checkpoint. If you think you are in the right place and there is no control, right "CLAIM" on your score card, our scoring people will sort it out from here.

  • Rogaining is a team sport and the team MUST stay together at all times.

Please do not bother the land owners
Before or after the event, please do not contact land owners.  We are only able to hold these events with the very generous help of land owners allowing us access over their property.  Non permission running or MTBing over their land could spell the end to Rogaining as we know it. Thanks very much for your support in this area.
